Hardshell or softshell? What are the differences and what should I choose?

Hardshell and softshell are two terms that, while the name suggests, can be expected from them, but their name does not tell the whole story. And the choice between them is also not the easiest. Both offer several different benefits.

If you are also one of those who are unable to make a decision, perhaps the following lines will help you orient yourself better and make the right choice. And maybe choose both.

What's hardshell?

Hardshell jackets are waterproof jackets that benefit from low weight, high durability and protection from natural elements such as water, snow or wind. The term hardshell is based on the nature of the fabric, which is stiffer than softshell, is not very elastic and is slightly "harder" to the touch. Touching hardshell material makes a distinctive sound, which is an easy way to distinguish it from softshell.

The material includes a membrane that removes sweat and moisture, while at the same time acting as a barrier to water drops.

Hardshell jackets are primarily designed and manufactured for protection against rain, wind or snow. They are excellent for typical winter sports activities such as skiing, but also as rain protection for hiking throughout the year. Hardshell materials are very durable and can handle abrasions from rocks.

What's softshell?

Softshell jackets are jackets made of materials that are elastic, offer high breathability and can withstand wind or light rain. The materials are often treated with a water-repellent treatment, thanks to which the drops do not absorb, but run down the surface of the jacket, so the softshell manages not to let water under the surface for some time. Unlike hardshells, softshell jackets move with the wearer's body and effectively wick away moisture, so they are suitable for activities where you expend more energy from you - such as trail running.

The softshell offers more protection against the cold than the hardshell (although the hardshell may have additional insulation), but it is slightly heavier, does not provide 100% protection from the rain and cannot be packed to such small dimensions as the hardshell.

Hardshell or softshell jacket? Which is the better choice for me?

If you are deciding whether to buy a hardshell or softshell jacket for your adventures, the answer is not so clear-cut. It is an individual decision, which depends on what forms of movement you do, how long hikes you take and whether only a minimal risk of rain means for you to stay at home, or you are one of those who do not mind the raindrops on the hike.

The softshell jacket should be your first choice if you are looking for a jacket for running, another endurance sport, or even a jacket for hiking as such, but only in dry conditions, without the risk of heavy rain or storm. For these activities and conditions, a softshell jacket is sufficient and even a better choice because it wicks moisture away and is more comfortable to wear.

A hardshell jacket should be part of your backpack whenever there is a risk of rain on your hike. As many of us know, the weather in the mountains is able to change all possible variants in a few minutes. Hardshell is a better choice for hikes in high mountain areas, where the weather is unstable, for multi-day hikes where you need to be prepared for everything, but also for winter sports such as skiing, where they also act as a barrier to snow.

Our verdict? Combine them

Softshell and hardshell are often compared, but both variants offer other benefits that complement each other perfectly. Softshell jackets not only work well as a top layer in dry conditions, but it has all the necessary properties (stretchability, breathability, thermal insulation), which should have a good middle layer under the top, protective layer. Especially in winter, when layering is the alpha and omega, their combination can provide you with everything you need to fully enjoy your adventures. Both in good and worse conditions.
